Tujuan narrative adalah untuk menghibur pendengar atau pembaca yang bertalian dengan pengalaman nyata atau khayal yang mengarah pada krisis kemudian menemukan suatu penyelesaian.

Dalam menulis teks naratif ada empat komponen yang perlu diperhatikan. Berikut rinciannya.

1. Orientasi

Orientasi adalah teks pembuka yang memperkenalkan tokoh, waktu kejadian, dan lokasi latar belakang kejadian {siapa, kapan, dimana}.

2. Komplikasi

Komplikasi ditempatkan setelah orientasi dan terdiri dari paragraf yang menjelaskan masalah aslinya. Komplikasi adalah masalah yang terletak di awal alur cerita yang berlanjut ke konflik, klimaks, dan antiklimaks sebuah cerita.

3. Resolusi

Resolusi adalah paragraf yang menjadi akhir cerita, yang menjadi penyelesaian dan akhir dari sebuah cerita. Masalah-masalah yang ada dalam sebuah teks naratif harus diselesaikan dan ditutup dengan akhir yang bahagia atau bahkan akhir yang tragis atau menyedihkan.

4. Reorientasi

Reorientasi adalah kalimat penutup yang menceritakan keadaan akhir tokoh dalam cerita dan terdapat pesan/pelajaran moral dalam cerita naratif.

1. Contoh Pertama

The Sleeping Beauty

Once upon a time there was a king and queen who for a very long time had no children, and when at length a little daughter was born to them they were so pleased that they gave a christening feast to which they invited a number of fairies.

But, unfortunately, they left out one rather old fairy, and she was so angry that she said the princess should die when she reached the age of sixteen, by pricking her hand with a spindle. All the other fairies present, except one, had already given the princess their beautiful gifts, and this last one said she could not prevent part of the wicked wish coming true; but her gift should be that the princess should not really die, but only fall into a deep sleep, which should last for a hundred years, and at the end of that time she should be awakened by a kings son. It all happened as the fairies had predicted. When the princess was sixteen years old she saw an old woman spinning and took the spindle from her to try this strange new work. Instantly she pricked her hand and fell into a deep sleep, as did everyone else in the palace. There she lay in a bower of roses, year after year, and the hedge around the palace garden grew so tall and thick that at last you could not have told that there was a castle at all.

At the end of the hundred years a kings son heard of the castle and the enchanted princess who lay asleep there and determined to rescue her. So he cut his way through the thick prickly hedge and at length he came to the princess. When he saw how lovely and how sweet she looked he fell in love with her and, stooping, kissed her lips. At once she awoke and with her the king and queen and all the courtiers, who had fallen asleep at the same time.

Snow White

Once upon a time there lived a little girl named snow white. She lived with her aunt and uncle because her parents were died.

One day she heard her Uncle and Aunt talking about leaving Snow White in the castle because they both wanted to go America and they didnt have enough money to sake Snow White.
Snow White did not want her Uncle and Aunt to do this, so she decided it would be best if she ran away. The next morning she ran away from home when her Aunt and Uncle were having breakfast. She ran away into the woods.

Then she saw this little cottage she knocked but no one answered, so she went inside and fell asleep. Meanwhile, the seven dwarfs were coming home from work. They went inside. There they found Snow White sleeping. Then Snow White woke up. She saw the dwarfs. The dwarfs said, what is your name? Snow White said, My name is Snow White. Doc, one of the dwarfs, said, If you wish, you may live here with us. Snow White said, Oh could I? Thank you. Then Snow White told the dwarfs the whole story and finally Snow White and the 7 dwarfs lived happily ever after.

Malin Kundang

Orientation :
This story tells of a mother and her son Malin Kundang who live in poverty. Even so, the mother struggled to provide a decent life for Malin Kundang.

Complication:
Until he grew up Malin Kundang wandered and promised to pick up his mother when he was rich. While wandering Malin became a wealthy merchant and managed to marry the daughter of the village head. However, Malin Kundang had forgotten his mother when he was rich and told his wife that his mother had died.

Then in one situation Malin and his wife experienced bad weather while boarding the ship. This forced the two of them to go down to Malin\'s hometown to buy fish. The whole village called Malin a rich merchant until finally his mother heard him and approached him.

Sure enough, the person who was approached was his mother, Malin Kundang. But the evil Malin Kundang did not consider the figure of his mother. Even his mother even showed proof of the truth that there was a wound on the hand that had made an impression on Malin\'s hand since childhood.

Resolution:
But Malin still did not admit it until in the end the mother lamented and cursed Malin to stone. After that, it was true that there was lightning that struck Malin and then his whole body turned to stone.

Reorientation:
You cannot be disobedient and sin against your parents. Love your parents as they loved you as a child.
