Acara ini memberikan penghargaan kepada lagu dan album komersial berdasarkan Gaon Music Chart.
Penghargaan untuk Artist of the Year sendiri dibagi menjadi kategori musik digital dan album fisik.
Pemenang kategori musik digital diberikan kepada lagu dengan jumlah download dan streaming digital tertinggi setiap bulannya dari rentang waktu Desember 2020 hingga November 2021.
Sedangkan pemenang Artist of the Year untuk album fisik diberikan kepada album dengan penjualan tertinggi di setiap kuartal selama periode yang sama.
